WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Montréal went 2-2-0-1 vs the Charge last season, with a 1-1-0-0 mark in Ottawa. Ottawa had at least one home win against all other four PWHL teams last year. The Victoire opened this season with a 4-3 shootout win over the Charge in Montréal.
The first meeting saw a combined 10 penalties, with Montréal going 2-for-7 on the power play and Ottawa going 1-for-3. It was the fourth PWHL game to see at least 10 combined PPs, and Montréal has been involved in all four – MTL 6 / NY 5 on Mar. 6, OTT 5 / MTL 5 on Mar. 10 and TOR 4 / MTL 6 on Apr. 20.
The Victoire’s 4-1 loss to New York on Wednesday was just the second multi-goal loss suffered at home since the start of last season – the other was a 4-2 loss to Ottawa Mar. 10. The four goals tied their most ever allowed (twice last season).
Rookie Cayla Barnes scored Montreal’s lone goal on Wednesday, and the No. 5 overall pick has points in each of her first two PWHL games along with No. 11 pick and Ohio State teammate Jennifer Gardiner. Barnes had at least one point in each of her final four NCAA games, including an assist in the Buckeyes 1-0 win in the 2024 National Championship Game.
Marie-Philip Poulin led the 2013 World Championship in Ottawa with 12 points (6G, 6A) and was named MVP, Best Forward and a Media All-Star as Canada earned a silver medal.
Ottawa captain Brianne Jenner will make her season debut after missing the first two games due to injury. She played in all 24 games last season and was the team's top scorer (20 PTS).
Ottawa beat Toronto, 3-2, at home on Tuesday, and has now won four of its last five home games (3-1-0-1) dating back to last season – the only blemish was a 2-0 loss to Montréal the last time these teams met in the nation’s capital (Apr. 27).
Tereza Vanišová has scored in each of Ottawa’s two games, matching her goal total from 23 GP last season split between these two clubs (17/MTL, 6/OTT). She is one of five players to score in each of her team’s first two games this season (Alex Carpenter, Sarah Nurse, Hilary Knight, Dominique Petrie).
Four of the Charge’s five international players lead the team in points, including Vanišová, fellow Czechs Kateřina Mrázová and Aneta Tejralová and Finn Ronja Savolainen (2A each).
The Charge have scored first in each of their first two games. They began the inaugural season by scoring first in each of their first four games, going 2-0-2-0 in that span.
Ottawa reduced the number of shots Emerance Maschmeyer faced between game one and game two, going from 46 against vs Montreal to 22 against vs Toronto.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
Victoire rookie Dara Greig on playing at the Canadian Tire Centre in front of her older brother – Senators forward Ridly Greig – who has not watched her play in over six years: "It will be super cool that he will see me play tonight. It was obviously hard when I was in college and he was playing pro, with such busy schedules and all. He wasn't able to make it out in the last, I don't know how many years. To have this game here, which is so convenient for him, is just awesome."
“I’m finally feeling like myself again and ready to get back in a game. I’m excited. I’m really excited for our fans. I think they earned us that opportunity (to play at Canadian Tire Centre). Hopefully it’s full and loud and I have no doubt that our fanbase will show up and be great for us. I’ve got some good memories from there. I played in one of my first World Championships there in 2013, but it’s our hometown rink now.” – Charge Captain Brianne Jenner.
FRIDAY’S GAME: The Charge will play for the first time at the Canadian Tire Centre – home of the Ottawa Senators – and the eighth NHL venue to host a PWHL game. The venue previously hosted the PWHPA All-Star Skills Competition on Dec. 11, 2022, and the 2013 IIHF Women’s World Championship. Tonight, the Charge will set a new attendance record for a home game, surpassing the 8,452 fans at TD Place on Apr. 27 against Montréal. The game will be preceded by a ceremony in commemoration of the victims of the Montréal Polytechnique gender-based massacre committed 35 years ago today. Canadian Tire will have a poster making station from the campaign - My Team, My Sign – on the upper Gate 1 bridge. There will be merchandise available at the main store, Gate 1. Allegra Nocita will sing the National Anthem.
