WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
These teams traded extra-time road wins in their first two meetings of the season before the Sirens won 5-0 in Minnesota on Jan. 4. The only other time Minnesota has allowed five goals was a 5-2 loss to New York last season, on May 4.
The Frost beat Montréal, 4-2, at Ball Arena in Denver on Sunday, their first multi-goal win since a 5-2 win over Ottawa on Dec. 19. Minnesota is the only PWHL team with at least one win (regulation or OT/SO) over each of the other five teams in the league this season.
Britta Curl-Salemme scored her third goal in her last four games on Sunday, giving her five total this season, tied with New York’s Alex Carpenter for the most in the PWHL. The 2024 second rounder is the only rookie leading her team in goals.
Claire Thompson has made the Tri-State area her home base while attending Princeton University and one year of medical school at NYU’s Grossman School of Medicine. The defender is currently on a leave of absence from her studies to play in the PWHL. At Princeton, Thompson was a teammate of former Ottawa goaltender Rachel McQuigge and is currently a teammate of her younger sister Brooke McQuigge.
The Frost have a pair of New York natives in defender Natalie Buchbinder (Fairport) & rookie forward Katy Knoll (Amherst).
Ex-Colgate teammates Kaitlyn O’Donohoe (MIN) and Allyson Simpson (NY) will face off after playing five NCAA seasons together. The two Raiders were led by Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo, both appearing in 175, or more, games.
New York beat Toronto, 1-0, in OT at home on Sunday in what was the first-ever 1-0 PWHL game in the regular season (there were two 1-0 games in the playoffs, both decided in 2OT).
Jessie Eldridge scored the overtime winner on Sunday, her second game-winner of the season. The only other players with multiple game-winning goals are Carpenter, Curl-Salemme and Montréal’s Marie-Philip Poulin (all have two). Eldridge has recorded multiple points in three of her last four games against Minnesota dating back to last season.
Corinne Schroeder made 26 saves on Jan. 4 against Minnesota and 28 saves on Sunday to become the first PWHL player to record back-to-back shutouts. She enters the game with a shutout streak at 156:44. Her only other PWHL shutout came in the first game in league history on Jan. 1, 2024, against Toronto. Schroeder has three games this season allowing one or zero goals, most in the league.
Schroeder (1.86 GAA) will start against Maddie Rooney (1.98 GAA) who will make her first start of the season against New York. It’s a battle between the league’s two best goals-against averages and the only netminders with five wins on the season.
Sarah Fillier played two seasons with Thompson at Princeton. The Tigers pair were selected in the first round of the 2024 PWHL Draft, followed by two Ohio State Buckeyes in Hannah Bilka (BOS) and Cayla Barnes (MTL). This would stand out if not for the trio of Clarkson Golden Knights (Ella Shelton (NY), Savannah Harmon (OTT/TOR), Erin Ambrose (MTL)) taken in round one of the inaugural draft.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“We know better than anyone how explosive New York can be. We need to be responsible defensively, get pucks to the net in the offensive zone and finish our scoring chances. We need to play the right way from the drop of the puck and be ready to play our game.” - Frost Head Coach Ken Klee.
“Our team is eager to carry the momentum from our last game into this matchup with Minnesota. We want to wrap up this home stand with a great effort and just play instinctively. Minnesota is a great team at the top of the standings so it’s a great measuring stick for us.” - Sirens Head Coach Greg Fargo.
WEDNESDAY’S GAME: The Sirens are going to light up ‘the Rock’ pink and unite for a powerful evening of hockey, hope, and solidarity in a game dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness. This special event aims to honor survivors, support those currently battling the disease, and remember those we’ve lost, all while promoting the importance of early detection and research. Fans are invited to show their support by creating “I fight for____” signs on the main concourse. New York hosts Minnesota for the second and final time this season at Prudential Center. They meet next as part of the PWHL Takeover Tour at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena on Mar. 16.
