WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The road team won the first two meetings between these teams last season, but since then, the home team has won seven in a row in this matchup (the final three games last season and all four this season). Each of the four games this season has been decided by multiple goals, with the winner scoring at least three goals in each. Toronto leads the league with eight multi-goal wins, followed by Boston with seven.
The Sceptres beat the Victoire, 2-1, in Montréal on Sunday, and now have wins in four of their last five road games (3-1-0-1). Toronto has allowed a league-low 1.55 goals per game since the beginning of February and has allowed more than two goals just once in that span. Boston’s 2.00 goals against per game in that span ranks second in the PWHL.
Both of Toronto’s goals on Sunday came in the second period. Since the start of February, Toronto has 17 second-period goals, four more than any other team. In that span, Boston has allowed just six goals in the middle frame, tied with the Sceptres for the fewest in the league.
Jesse Compher scored her ninth goal of the season on Sunday (her 25th game) after scoring just one goal in 24 games for Toronto last season. Her next goal will make her the league’s ninth double-digit goal scorer this season after there were only six last season. Compher returns to the Boston University campus after playing four years for the Terriers and serving as captain in her senior year before transferring to Wisconsin. As a sophomore, she helped the Terriers capture the Beanpot Championship, assisting on the overtime winning goal in the final. She played two games at Agganis Arena, most notably on Feb. 16, 2019, with a goal and two assists in a 3-3 tie against New Hampshire.
Four more Sceptres are no strangers to Boston and visiting the BU campus, including Daryl Watts who spent two seasons at Boston College and became the first freshman to win the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. Burlington, MA defender Kali Flanagan helped the Eagles win the 2016 and 2017 Beanpot. Rookie defender Megan Carter won multiple Hockey East Defender of the Year awards for Northeastern, and forward Hayley Scamurra was named Best Defensive Forward in the WHEA as a senior for the Huskies.
Boston returns to Agganis Arena after debuting at the BU venue on Mar. 8 in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,968. The Fleet lost to the Victoire 3-2 in overtime with home goals by Jamie Lee Rattray and Amanda Pelkey, and two-assist performances by Lexie Adzija and Jillian Dempsey.
The Fleet beat Montréal, 3-2, at home in a shootout on Mar. 18, extending their point streak to nine games (4-3-2-0), a streak that began after a 3-1 loss in Toronto on Feb. 14. During the streak (since Feb. 16), Boston is averaging 3.22 goals per game, most in the league.
Hilary Knight scored her 13th goal of the season in Boston’s last game (her 24th this season) and has more than doubled her goal output from last season (6 goals in 24 games). The Fleet captain also added an assist, giving her a league-leading 26 points (since passed by New York’s Sarah Fillier, 27). It was her sixth game with at least one goal and one assist, tied for the most in the league (New York’s Jessie Eldridge).
Susanna Tapani is coming off her fifth multi-point game on Mar. 18 – a game where she also scored her second shootout-winner of the season. The Finnish forward earned PWHL Third Star of the Week honors. The league’s Second Star is at the other end of the ice in Sceptres goaltender Kristen Campbell who has a .951 save percentage in eight games since Feb. 14 against Boston.
Megan Keller leads the head-to-head season series in scoring with four points (2G, 2A) in four games against Toronto.
Canada defeated the United States 5-1 at Agganis Arena in a pre-Olympic exhibition back on Oct. 25, 2017, with Toronto’s Natalie Spooner scoring two goals and Boston’s Jill Saulnier contributing one assist in the win. Sceptres captain Blayre Turnbull, defender Renata Fast, and Hockey Operations Manager Lauriane Rougeau also played for Canada, while the U.S. lineup featured the Sceptres’ Flanagan, the Fleet’s Hannah Brandt, Keller, Knight and Pelkey, PWHL Hockey Ops Consultant Meghan Duggan, and broadcast analysts Megan Bozek and Gigi Marvin.
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“It’s exciting to be returning to the Boston University campus after spending four of the best years here! I’m excited to step on this ice with my Toronto teammates and have so many close friends in the stands and important people who made my college years so memorable. We’re looking to come out strong and keep the momentum throughout the game, making sure we get three points.” – Sceptres forward Jesse Compher.
“Most of us in the locker room know what it was like last year to be fighting for a playoff spot. We know that anyone can win and come back at any time. I don't think we're ever taking our foot off the gas here... This is just the beginning of us getting our confidence.” - Fleet Head Coach Courtney Kessel.
WEDNESDAY’S GAME: The Fleet are hosting Youth Hockey Night at Agganis Arena, spotlighting youth organizations across Massachusetts.
